My partner and I are unemployed right now. We’ll be working again soon, but we’ve had some dark times lately.

New Zealand implemented a lockdown during a transitional period of our lives.

We’d already spent most of our money travelling and enjoying life. So when the lockdown happened, we were a bit scared. We would be stuck at a hostel for at least two weeks with no income.

Two weeks turned into a month. During that time, we fretted often about our financial situation. But I had hope. I knew that even if we lost all of our money, we had a support network that would catch our fall.

Finally, the government announced that it would likely be dropping down an alert level. More jobs will be available and we can move to a more affordable place to rent. My partner got a job offer, and I have good prospects as well. This all happened in the nick of time.

Throughout the darkness of this lockdown period, there were silver linings. *

  • We were given an incredible rate for accommodation.
  • We ate more healthily than usual.
  • We had time to spend on wholesome activities that can get sidelined in the hustle and bustle of normal life.
